The Western Australian Council of State School Organisations, WACSSO, is proud to celebrate Public Education Day and recognise the vital role public schools play in building strong, connected and inclusive communities across Western Australia.

Public schools are where children from every background learn together, where differences are respected and where diversity is valued and celebrated. Our public schools reflect the communities they serve and provide opportunities for every child to belong, participate, and succeed.

WACSSO President Pania Turner said public education remains one of Australia’s greatest social assets, bringing together families from diverse cultures, experiences, abilities, faiths, identities and circumstances.

“Public schools welcome every child and every family. That diversity is one of the greatest strengths of our education system and of our society. When children learn alongside others with different experiences and perspectives, they develop understanding, empathy and respect, skills that are just as important as academic achievement.”

Public education works best when families are genuine partners in their child’s learning.

“Parents and carers are children’s first and most influential educators. Strong partnerships between families and schools can be a powerful contributor to student success.”

Public Education Day is also an opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of teachers, education assistants, school leaders, support staff, volunteers and parents, who work together every day to create positive learning environments for students.

Our public schools are supported by the active involvement of P&Cs, whose volunteer efforts help build connected communities. Through fundraising, advocacy and community-building activities, P&Cs play a vital role in championing their schools.

While there is much to celebrate, WACSSO continues to advocate for the investment and support needed to ensure every child can access a high-quality public education.
